Oaxaca is a city heavily influenced by indigenous culture. It is located about 300 miles south of Mexico City and six miles from the famous indigenous site of Monte Alban. Located 5,000 feet above sea level, its moderate climate is unbeatable and is one of the safest tourist cities to visit. Guadalajara is the second largest city in Mexico. It has a thriving music scene and the largest art market in the country. In both of these cities, volunteer work in education, health and social work are greatly needed.

Social work volunteers usually participate in projects working with children or with community based projects. Education volunteers usually teach and work directly with the students in a classroom setting. If you elect to pursue humanitarian volunteer opportunities in Mexico, it is suggested that you have a basic to intermediate understanding of Spanish. Most importantly, if you are in the health sector, you must know Spanish at a medical, near-professional level.

In addition to the humanitarian projects, there are also opportunities available in environmental conservation. In agricultural cities such as Tecoman (off of the Pacific coast), there is a need for help in farming and agricultural efforts. In a beach-heavy city like Playa del Carmen, there is demand for volunteers to help clean the beaches and rehabilitate the sea turtle population.
