My friend and I volunteered on the Perhentian Islands at the Jungle Trekking and Sea Turtle Conservation program. We had an excellent experience and learned so much about sea turtles and the threats that they face.
A typical day consisted of working in the hatchery and rotating each night to patrol beaches. We also gave English lessons and lead activities with some high school groups. We got the opportunity to see sea turtles lay eggs, we watched for poachers and assist in releasing baby turtles! This was the highlight.
The team on the island is very passionate about their work and their goals.
The accommodation was good and there were times we got to snorkel and dive. We really felt like we were a part of the local team. I would recommend this program to everyone interested in conserving turtles.
