Volunteering in South Africa – My Incredible Volunteer Experience

Where do I even begin. The decision to volunteer in South Africa had been on my mind for a while but it was a quick decision of wanting to end my gap year with something that the people around me hadn’t done. Animals and farm work are my passion, so to find the Wildlife Sanctuary project was amazing.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got there but I can now say the sanctuary was the most amazing experience I have had, and I am so proud of myself for getting out there and having this lifetime experience. The people you meet and the experiences that are had will last with you for a life time.

The animals are incredible. When the leaders say grab your cameras and your smiles you instantly know you have some type of animal interaction, but you never know what animal or what you will be doing with the animals until you get there. Working with the lions, tigers and the elephants was probably my favorite. Everyone that works on the project are all so caring and nice. I have never met people so passionate about their job. They also make sure that you have the best possible photo that you can have with the animals.

Mondays are the only days that you know exactly what you will be doing for the day but the rest of the week is a surprise. Thursdays are excursion days where the leaders will arrange an activity for the day. The work load to animal interactions is evenly spread. I honestly expected to be doing more work and working longer hours.

But all in all I would suggest Wildlife Sanctuary project to anyone with the passion and desire for it. it was an incredible experience that will last with me forever and I can’t wait to go back and do it all again.
