Program Schedule:
  • Arrival Day, Sunday: Volunteers arrive at Bagdogra Airport and will be transferred to Darjeeling. Evening orientation will introduce the region’s history, cultural diversity, and outline the volunteering activities.
  • Day 1, Monday: Introduction to Darjeeling’s social and cultural heritage, with a guided tour of the town’s landmarks including the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Toy Train) and the Peace Pagoda. Volunteers will meet their assigned community outreach or environmental projects.
  • Days 2-3, Tuesday & Wednesday:
    • Community Outreach: Volunteers will engage in local schools, helping children with education programs, English language lessons, and extracurricular activities. Support is also provided for health awareness campaigns or workshops on sanitation and nutrition.
    • Tea Plantation Support: Volunteers will work alongside local tea farmers, learning about sustainable practices and the production of Darjeeling tea, and helping improve community-based tea farming practices.
  • Day 4, Thursday:
    • Eco-tourism Development: Volunteers assist local tourism organizations in promoting responsible eco-tourism, working on projects aimed at preserving Darjeeling’s natural beauty, including forest conservation, waste management, and wildlife protection.
    • Cultural Exchange: Participate in workshops focused on Nepali, Tibetan, and Bengali art forms such as traditional dance, music, and handicrafts. Volunteers will have the opportunity to learn local crafts, including weaving, pottery, and wood carving.
  • Day 5, Friday:
    • Community Outreach Continued: Volunteers work on local infrastructure improvement projects, such as sanitation and water supply initiatives, helping provide better living conditions to rural areas near Darjeeling.
    • Environmental Education: Conduct community awareness programs regarding sustainable farming, waste management, and the protection of local wildlife.
  • Days 6-7, Saturday & Sunday: Weekends are free for volunteers to explore Darjeeling and surrounding areas:
    • Kanchenjunga Viewpoint: Take a hike to the Kanchenjunga Viewpoint, where you can see the third-highest mountain in the world.
    • Local Markets and Monasteries: Visit Darjeeling’s bustling markets, explore Tibetan Buddhist monasteries such as the Yiga Choeling Monastery, and experience the region’s diverse religious influences.
    • Adventure Tourism: For an additional cost, volunteers can engage in trekking, paragliding, or visit nearby places like Sikkim, Tista River, and Madhuri Lake.

What’s Included:

  • Food: Volunteers will receive three meals a day (Monday-Friday), focusing on local Darjeeling cuisine, such as momo (dumplings), thukpa (soup noodles), and traditional rice dishes. Weekends are free for volunteers to explore local eateries.
  • Transfers: Airport pick-up from Bagdogra Airport and transport to Darjeeling accommodation. Local transport for project-related activities is included.
  • Support: 24/7 emergency support, local guides, and a dedicated program coordinator to assist with any logistical needs.

Volunteer Age Requirements:
  • Minimum age: 18. Volunteers aged 16-17 may apply with parental consent. Families with children over 12 years old are welcome to join the program.

  • Trekking to Kanchenjunga Viewpoint: Take a weekend hike through Darjeeling’s scenic landscapes to reach the Kanchenjunga viewpoint and capture stunning views of the Himalayas.
  • Visit to Monasteries: Explore Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, where volunteers can learn about Buddhist traditions and culture.
