Program Highlights:

The kindergarten and teaching placements can accept families with children as young as 5 years old. Families must upgrade to a private room for an additional fee. All volunteers must apply IN ADVANCE for B-211 Social visa. The cost of the visa is approximately $50 USD.

Located at the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands between Java and Lombok, Bali is one of Indonesia’s most admired islands. The green, terraced rice fields, coconut forests and endless beaches are only part of the island’s natural beauty, making Bali a very popular destination for domestic and international tourism. Artistic and cultural interactions, such as traditional Balinese dance performances, are experiences you do not want to miss. This project is located in southern Bali, in the rural town of Ubud, which is surrounded by small farms, rice paddies and dense forests.
Teaching Project: Volunteers will be placed in a school in the community. You will work with children aged 7-11, who know very little or no English. The main focus of your role is to teach basic English comprehension skills and in so doing, prepare them for primary and secondary school. They are taught English through creative games and also learn the necessary skills to become serious and successful students. Volunteers work independently and tasks can include:
Medical Outreach: Lack of medical care and healthcare resources is a significant problem for the Ubud community. This project encourages and inspires local children to care more about their personal health and hygiene. This could include teaching them how to brush their teeth, wash their hands as well as how to clean their body and clothes. You will help improve the healthcare situation by leading informational health sessions as well as showing them ways they can live healthier lives.
Construction Project: At this project, you will be helping to improve the local infrastructure of the community by renovating and repairing existing buildings.You will also be working as part of a team, with construction workers and local laborers, helping to build a sense of solidarity within the community.
A typical day: Volunteers on the Teaching and Kindergarten placements typically work 2-3 hours per day and plan lessons for for another 2 hours. Other volunteers work approximately 4-5 hours per day, Monday through Friday. Your weekends are free to explore Bali or travel to other destinations.
Holidays: During some holidays, the children will be out of school and the Kindergarten Project will not be available. During this time, volunteers will be primarily involved in repairs and renovations. The Kindergarten Project will not be available during the months of June, July, August and December.
Specific, consecutive holidays where the Kindergarten Project will not take place:
- Creating lesson plans
- Tutoring children
- Teaching classes
- Running sports activities

Laundry:
There are laundry facilities in the village for a small fee.
Accommodations:
Volunteers will be sharing a room at the volunteer house with 4-8 volunteers. Rooms are equipped with bunk beds, electricity, a kitchen and western style toilet facilities. A private room can be arranged for an additional fee. The accommodation is a 15-30 minute ride to the different project sites. Transportation from the accommodations to the project sites are included.
Food:
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided during the week, while on weekends, only breakfast and dinner will be provided. You also have the option to buy your own groceries and cook for yourself in the kitchen. Indonesian food is tasty and diverse and volunteers can expect to experience a myriad of flavors and meals during their stay. Typical dishes included miegoreng (fried noodles and vegetables), nasigoreng (fried rice and vegetables) or gadogado (mixed vegetables with a satay sauce). For those who do not eat meat, Indonesian cooking uses a lot of tofu and tempeh (soybeans), we also provide some western dishes. Breakfasts are varied and include pancakes, fresh fruit, toast etc. Tea, coffee and purified water is available at the volunteer house. We do not recommend that you drink the tap water.
Please take note of this project's minimum requirements:

There is no doubt that Bali has something for everyone. However, if you are looking to explore beyond Bali, you can head west on a 30-minute ferry and visit Java. With more than 450 different bird species, Java is a bird watcher’s paradise, surrounded by endless rice fields and volcanic mountains. For a more cultural experience you can explore Lombok Island, which is famous for its wooden masks, traditional hand woven textiles and pottery. You could also visit Sanur, an east coast town south of Bali; a worthwhile visit for an early sunrise hike overlooking the white sandy beaches and beautiful scenery.
