Volunteers on this project will participate in a variety of community development iniatives. Our volunteers get involved in:
- Teaching English to children, teachers, and local adults
- Helping raise awareness regarding HIV/AIDS in the community
- Assisting organizations who represent marginalized groups in society, such as the elderly
- Assisting in improving educational facilities in the community
- Playing developmental games with the children

This project takes place in Moshi, in the north of Tanzania, which is situated at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Moshi is a modern, vibrant town with a dynamic mix of Tanzanians from different tribes and backgrounds, all living and working together side by side. It also has a number of restaurants, supermarkets, and cafes and offers day trips to local attractions.
Moshi is the perfect location for adventurers wanting to explore a fascinating part of Africa. Located a few hours’ drive from major safari destinations, such as the Serengeti, the Ngorogoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire, it's ideally situated for volunteers to experience all that Tanzania has to offer.

As a volunteer, your contribution will consist of various community development initiatives at the following projects:
- Nursery schools: We work with several nursery schools in the Moshi area. Nursery schools are usually divided into three classes in Tanzania: babies (ages 3-4), juniors (ages 4-5), and seniors (ages 5-7). As a volunteer, you will help with all three classes and your tasks will include teaching the children English, singing songs, playing games and leading creative activities.
- Education center: The education system in Tanzania is very rigid and complex, which results in many young people leaving school early. This education center sponsors young people so that they can gain a valuable education. Volunteers in this project teach English to teenagers and local adults from the community.
- Maasai literacy and English project: A lot of people from the Maasai tribe come to Moshi to secure jobs in the tourism industry. Many have not had the opportunity to attend school when they were children and, therefore, most cannot read or write. Volunteers work on improving literacy, as well as teaching basic English to help the Maasai in their jobs.
- English lessons for tourism students: In the afternoon, you will have the chance to volunteer at a small tourism college, which offers courses in hotel management and tour guiding and operating. Here, volunteers offer supplementary English lessons to students, as well as offer advice on customer service, interview skills, and CV/resume writing.
- HIV/AIDS education: You will facilitate after-school classes in several large secondary schools in Moshi, which includes teaching students English, as well as HIV/AIDS awareness.

Internet facilities are available in town for a small fee.
Laundry:
A weekly laundry service is available for an additional fee.
Accommodations:
Volunteers stay in the rural village of Msaranga at the project base, about six kilometers away from Moshi. At the project base, volunteers will stay in comfortable, shared rooms, equipped with bunk beds and mosquito nets.
Food:
Volunteers receive three meals a day. Breakfast includes eggs, porridge, toast, fruit, tea, and coffee. Lunch and dinner include a mix of local and international foods, which are freshly prepared each day.
Please take note of this project's minimum requirements:
- Minimum age of18
- Police clearance
- Good English (some previous teaching experience will be helpful, but is not essential)
- Immunizations (please consult your local travel clinic)
Tanzania offers a variety of tours and safari options, which are perfect for a weekend getaway or a post/pre-project safari. Moshi is only a few hours’ drive from exciting safari destinations such as the Serengeti, Ngorogoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara.
The project coordinators in Moshi can help advise you on a number of different getaways which can include a trip to the Tanzanite mines, a visit to Zanzibar, a trip to the famous Serengeti National Park or the unique Ngorongoro Crater, and, of course, climbing the mighty Kilimanjaro!
