Education is one of the most fundamental and crucial ways to make an impact on a struggling community. To empower the young generation on the island to grow and develop intellectually and physically would ultimately be giving the community the necessary basics to thrive in the larger world. This program aims to give the people of Fiji the tools to create a sustainable and rewarding life for themselves and their community on their island.

Fiji is a country with an extensive history of unrest, but despite its socio-economic, political, and cultural struggles in the past, has now emerged as a stable and well-established country with a lot to offer. It is a compilation of 332 paradise-like islands surrounded by warm, tropical water and beautiful coral reefs. Volunteers will be placed in Dawasamu, which is a region on the mainland island of Viti Levu, in Fiji.

As a volunteer on this project, you will be working with young children from all over the island at two different schools in Dawasamu. English is the official language of the school, but is often not the language spoken at home, resulting in the students' lack of confidence in their English language skills.

Your tasks may include:
  • Assisting the teachers with their work load in planning and executing lessons and giving direct guidance to students in academic subjects such as English, Math, and Science.
  • Giving the students practice and experience conversing with a native English speaker in order to boost their confidence and get them speaking more.
  • Preparing activities and lessons in Physical Education, Music, and Art – subjects which are included in the required curriculum but are often overlooked.
Volunteers will be working Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Weekends and evenings are free for lesson planning, chores, social activities, or exploring the area.

An appropriate collared shirt is provided upon arrival for volunteers to wear during work.
During the weekends, you will be able to travel and explore around the area. Many participants enjoy travelling to other islands in the area for a quick day trip, relaxing at luxurious resorts in the area, and exploring the water with scuba diving. After the program is over, there are even more recommended places to visit, attainable after a day or two of travelling. These include travelling to Taveuni (known as the “garden of Fiji”) or visiting the capital city of Suva.

Please note: Water taxis are available to transport you to your desired tourist destinations around the island for around $30 USD round trip. Exploration of the nearby area by foot is always encouraged.
