As an intern, you will learn how to make vegan pastries and desserts from ingredients which are not typically found in regular desserts.  For example, because the bakery does not use milk or butter, you will make these ingredients from scratch by using nuts and seeds.  Interns will be able to try their hand at making vegan chocolate for the incredibly delicious chocolate mousse and creamy fillings for strawberry crumbles.

There is no need to have any prior cooking or baking knowledge as long as you have the desire to learn and the willingness to try new things.

A typical day: After enjoying breakfast at your hostel, you'll head off to your internship to assist with the day's tasks. This could include measuring ingredients, making batters, packaging products and much more. After a break for lunch, you'll continue with any unfinished work before heading back to your hostel to clean up and cook dinner (or try out to one of the many restaurants in the area). You'll work 5 days a week for about 5-7 hours a day.

Holidays: Please note that the months of September and October have several holidays that may affect your trip.
Internet
Internet:  Free WiFi is available in the hostel. Volunteers will receive a SIM card at orientation with 40 GB of data and unlimited calls to US, Canadian and Israeli numbers.
Laundry
Laundry:  Washing machines are available in the hostel for a small fee.
Accommodations
Accommodations:  You will stay at a hostel in a mixed-gender dorm room with up to 9 other people and a shared bathroom. The room is basic but comfortable and has bed linens, towels, air conditioning and a closet. The hostel is located right in the center of Tel Aviv, a short walk from the beach. If you do not want to stay at the hostel and prefer to book other accommodations, please let us know following registration. We will be able to refund you a portion of the volunteer fee and advise you about other options.
Food:  A traditional Israeli breakfast is provided in the hostel dining room and consists of breads, olives, vegetables, labaneh (a type of yogurt), coffee and tea. There is a self-catering kitchen available for your use and plenty of inexpensive restaurants and cafes nearby. A family-style vegan lunch will be provided at the bakery as well.
Please take note of this project's minimum requirements:
  • Minimum age of 18
  • Responsible, reliable and flexible
  • Genuine interest in learning about vegan baking
There are many attractions in Tel Aviv and adventure activities such as surfing, paddle boarding and wind surfing.  Visiting other cities and attractions including Jerusalem and Eilat, the Dead Sea and Masada are easy via public transportation.  You can travel to the Negev Desert to see shooting stars, enjoy the plant diversity of the Bahai Gardens in Haifa, view archeological ruins in Caesarea or the grottoes in Rosh Hanikra.  Israel has some of the best nature areas and hiking trails such as the Jesus Trail in the north and those that are in the Negev Desert.
